With guest speaker – MALCOLM JOHNSTON!
Malcolm Johnston, hailing from the prestigious Theo Green School of jockeys alongside renowned champions like Gordon Spinks and Darren Beadman, emerged as a luminary in the racing world. Born in 1956 in Orange, Western NSW, Johnston’s ascent began under Theo Green’s mentorship at Rosehill and later at Randwick, culminating in his landmark victory in the 1976 VRC Lightning Handicap aboard Desirable, trained by Colin Hayes. His alliance with Tommy Smith marked the genesis of his famed partnership with Kingston Town, earning him the moniker ‘Miracle Johnston.’ Together, they clinched 25 victories out of 30 races, including five Group One titles, notably the 1980 Cox Plate. Johnston’s illustrious career spanned three apprenticeship premierships and three Sydney premiership titles, encompassing a remarkable 39 Group One victories and over 2000 wins globally. Despite his unparalleled success, Johnston faced setbacks, including suspensions and legal disputes, yet his unwavering dedication to the sport remained resolute. Transitioning to training in 1997, he continued his legacy, guiding over 200 winners, and assumed a pivotal role as ‘Training Officer – Hunter & North West Region’ at Racing NSW, mentoring aspiring talents. Renowned for his wit and humor, Johnston infuses levity into his corporate speaking engagements, yet his reverence for Kingston Town as the epitome of champion status remains steadfast, embodying his enduring passion for racing.
